Feeding your puppy.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a list of 16 pet food brands that may be linked to increased risk canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The investigation, which began in July 2018, was conducted to determine a cause of the drastic increase in reports of DCM in dogs, including breeds without genetic predisposition.

Brands named in the report include Acana, Zignature, Taste of the Wild, 4Health, Earthborn Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Nature’s Domain, Fromm, Merrick, California Natural, Natural Balance, Orijen, Nature’s Variety, NutriSource, Nutro and Rachael Ray Nutrish. Many of the foods identified are labeled as “grain-free” and contain a high proportion of peas, lentils, other legume seeds and potatoes.

I tried feeding Purina dog food until two of my dogs developed severe bloody stools (this past year 2024), within two weeks of feeding Purina speciality dog foods. And we had to go to see the veterinarian .   Several of my dogs did not want to eat the food. If your puppy does not want to eat food that you have given to them, I would trust the dog and feed something else.

I continue to research dog foods, make my own several times a week and supplement with dry food (mostly for convenience in a busy day). Some people like to feed raw foods, I'm not in this court. However, I do give my dogs raw beef marrow bones, in the grocery meat section most Friday evenings.

My number 1 choice at this time to feed your puppy is Science diet by Hills, found at Tractor Supply & pet supply chains,  and   Pure Balance dog foods sold at Walmart.  Remember no grain free dog foods for your puppy! Additionally, adding Greek Yogurt low fat is great for a probiotic .  And raw carrots for teething.
